Press Release: Jem & Ella, a celebration for Dads and their daughters of all ages

This Spring Run Ragged’s Jem & Ella will tour theatres around Wales. Performed and choreographed by father and daughter Jem Treays and Ella Treays. Directed by Paula Crutchlow.

Ella is mad on ballet and Jem is a professional contemporary dancer and theatre maker.

Jem & Ella is a show about change: Ella is a 12 year old but will soon be a teenager; Jem has recently turned 50 and is developing a bald patch.

Over the past few years they have been trying to capture this change by recording their conversations and dances in the kitchen, whilst observing the rituals, the disagreements and the closer moments they’ve had as father and daughter.

The show is a blend of home video, dialogue, and dance. It is aimed at adults and children alike – it’s especially suited for fathers and daughters.

Jem Treays comments:
“When Ella asked me to create with her- I leapt at the chance. Developing the work over the last three years has given me the opportunity to dance with her and watch her grow. The work itself is live, energetic, improvisational and nuanced. I hope that audiences will find it funny, engaging, thought provoking and moving, and that we manage to shed some truth about the relationships between fathers and daughters.”

Ella Treays comments:
“I’ve enjoyed making the show because I like dancing with my dad. I hope that audiences enjoy it, have fun with us and recognise things from their own relationships. Working with my dad has been both fun AND stressful.”

Datganiad i’r wasg: Jem & Ella, sioe i bawb o bob oed, sy’n dathlu’r berthynas rhwng tad a’i ferch

Y gwanwyn hwn bydd cynhyrchiad Run Ragged Jem & Ella yn teithio o gwmpas theatrau ledled Cymru. Y perfformiad a’r coreograffi gan y tad a’r ferch, Jem Treays ac Ella Treays. Cyfarwyddwyd gan Paula Crutchlow.

Mae Ella wth ei bodd gyda bale ac mae Jem yn ddawnsiwr cyfoes a gwneuthurwr theatr proffesiynol.

Mae Jem & Ella yn sioe am newid: mae Ella yn 12 oed ond bydd yn ei harddegau cyn hir; mae Jem bellach yn 50 ac yn dechrau colli’i wallt.

Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf maen nhw wedi ceisio cipio’r newid hwn drwy recordio eu sgyrsiau a’u dawnsfeydd yn y gegin, tra’n sylwi ar y defodau, yr anghytuno a’r enydau agos y maent wedi’u cael fel tad a merch.

Mae’r sioe yn gyfuniad o fideo cartref, deialog a dawns. Mae wedi’i hanelu at oedolion a phlant fel ei gilydd – mae’n arbennig o addas i dadau a merched.

Meddai Jem Treays:
“Pan ofynnodd Ella i mi greu gyda hi – roeddwn wrth fy modd. Mae datblygu’r gwaith dros y tair blynedd diwethaf wedi rhoi cyfle i i mi ddawnsio gyda hi a’i gwylio hi’n tyfu. Mae’r gwaith ei hun yn fyw, yn egnïol, yn llawn byrfyfyr a naws. Rwy’n gobeithio y bydd cynulleidfaoedd yn ei gael yn ddoniol, yn ddifyr, yn deimladwy ac yn rhywbeth sy’n ysgogi’r meddwl, a’n bod yn llwyddo i ddatgelu peth gwirionedd am y berthynas rhwng tadau a merched.”

Meddai Ella Treays:
“Rwy’ wedi mwynhau gwneud y sioe oherwydd rwy’n hoffi dawnsio gyda dad. Rwy’n gobeithio y bydd cynulleidfaoedd yn ei mwynhau, yn cael hwyl gyda ni ac yn adnabod pethau o’u perthnasoedd eu hunain. Mae gweithio gyda fy nhad wedi bod yn hwyl AC yn llawn straen.”
